Not be outdone by today’s Film Society of Lincoln Center announcement of the Main Slate for their 55th New York Film Festival, the popular Austin genre festival, Fantastic Fest, has announced the first wave of their own slate.
Movies premiering at Toronto and other festivals, such as Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and S. Craig Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99, starring Vince Vaughn, will also screen at Fantastic Fest, but some of the World Premieres are far more interesting.
Two Stephen King adaptations will play at the fest including the World Premiere of Zak Hilditch’s 1922, based on Stephen King’s story about a man confessing to his wife’s murder, and the US Premiere of Mike Flanagan’s Gerald’s Game, about a woman who gets handcuffed to a bed and stranded while roleplaying with her husband.
So far, Gerald’s Game hasn’t been announced for other festivals, so it’s interesting to see it listed as a U.S. Premiere, meaning it may be a late addition to Toronto’s Midnight Madness line-up. Previous Mike Flanagan film, Oculus, played at the Canadian festival.
This year’s Fantastic Fest line-up includes a number of movies that played at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival last month, as well as Tribeca in April and Cannes in May.
This year’s festival runs from September 21 through September 28 at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin.
