J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot and reality production company World of Wonders are joining forces to produce a half-hour dramedy series fictionalizing RuPaul‘s rise from drag queen to stardom. Set in 1980’s New York City, the series is written by Power executive producer Gary Lennon.
The series is expected to be up for sale soon and Warner Bros. TV, where Bad Robot is located, has latched on as the project’s studio.
RuPaul, who won an Emmy in 2016 for best host of a reality competition program, was raised in San Diego and then moved to Atlanta to study performing arts, to which he succeeded by moving to New York where he became a well-known figure in the night club scene, the basis for the series.
World of Wonders is best known for producing RuPaul’s Drag Race since its inception in 2009 along with all of its spinoff series.
RuPaul, Bad Robot, and Lennon are all repped by CAA.
