Reed Morano will direct the film, which is based on a four-book series of novels written by Mark Burnell. Wilson and Broccoli will produce under their Eon Productions banner along with IM Global, whose Stuart Ford and Greg Shapiro will executive produce alongside Burnell.
Lively will play Stephanie Patrick, whose family dies in a plane crash that should’ve claimed her life too. When she discovers the crash wasn’t an accident, she sets out to exact revenge, Jason Bourne-style.
With sequels to Salt and Lucy seemingly stuck in development hell, it’s smart of Eon and IM Global to set build a new action franchise around Lively, who recently showed off her physicality in The Shallows. If The Rhythm Section proves to be a hit, there are three other books in the popular Stephanie Patrick series — Gemini, The Third Woman and Chameleon.
IM Global and WME Global are handling worldwide rights for the project, which is expected to start production this fall in both the U.S. and Europe.
Morano is a veteran cinematographer who recently wrapped the Peter Dinklage-Elle Fanning sci-fi drama I Think We’re Alone Now after making her feature directorial debut with the indie drama Meadowland. She has directed several episodes of Hulu’s hit series The Handmaid’s Tale.
Lively will soon be seen opposite Jason Clarke in Marc Forster’s thriller All I See Is You. She’s also attached to star in Paul Feig’s thriller A Simple Favor and The Husband’s Secret for CBS Films. She’s represented by Management 360 and WME, which also reps Morano and Eon.
