Michael Arndt, writer of “Toy Story 3,” is in talks with Lionsgate to work on the script for CATCHING FIRE, sequel to the smash hit, “The Hunger Games,” which bowed earlier this year. He would be taking over duties from Simon Beaufoy, who wrote previous drafts.
In this entry, in the series based on Suzanne Collins bestselling young adult novels, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun. Prior contestants must return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence is set to reprise her role as Katniss Eberdeen. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, and Woody Harrelson have all agreed to return for the second movie. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) is directing the film after Gary Ross dropped out during negotiations.
Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik are producing.
Arndt only has two produced scripts to his name. The most recent was the finale to the Disney “Toy Story” franchise and the other was “Little Miss Sunshine,” which earned Arndt the Academy Award in 2006. Also on his slate is the long-gestating Disney pic, “Order of Seven,” which has Saorise Ronan attached to star.
He is repped by Verve.
