Academy Award-nominated actress Catherine Keener is set to join Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin for SOLDADO, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Sicario. Stefano Sollima is attached to direct the script from Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote Sicario.
The sequel follows Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro) and CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), who in the first film established themselves as hellbent on hunting down cartel kingpins, no matter what. Keener will step into the role of Brolin’s boss. Instead of the drug trade, the sequel will focus on the dangerous aspect of the smuggling operations between Mexico and the US and the fact that terrorists can use the network of tunnels and other routes to make their way into America.
Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk will produce alongside Black Label Meia’s Molly Smith and Thad and Trent Luckinbill, and Edward McDonnell. Lionsgate and Black Label are set to finance.
Keener recently starred in HBO’s Show Me a Hero and can be seen in handful of projects within the year including November Criminals opposite Chloe Grace Moretz as well as Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out. She can also be seen in the upcoming family drama We Don’t Belong Here with the late Anton Yelchin.
She is repped by Gersh and Special Artists Agency.
