The film will follow Starr Carter (Thomas), a 16-year-old African American student whose balancing two worlds: The poverty stricken black neighborhood where she lives and the privileged suburban prep school she attends. Yet these worlds are on the verge of collapse when Starr sees her unarmed best friend die at the hands of a white cop. The community wants answers, but the only one who truly knows what happened is Starr, but if she speaks up she endangers herself and her family.
Common will play Starr’s uncle, a member of the police force. He has most recently been seen in Girls Trip, the surprise comedy of the summer that has grossed over $104 million at the North American box office. Common and Tillman also worked together on Barbershop: The Next Cut last year.
Amandla Stenberg is known for her portrayal of the famous Hunger Games character, Rue. She also starred in this year’s romantic drama Everything, Everything.
