20th Century Fox has purchased Drew Goddard’s spec script BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE, which will serve as the second directorial effort for the Cabin in the Woods filmmaker, the Tracking Board has confirmed.
In addition to writing and directing duties, Goddard will also produce Bad Times At The El Royale (capitalization intended), though he’s keeping plot details under wraps. Sources, however, say it’s a contained thriller with genre elements, but only top studio execs were given the opportunity to read it, hence the vague nature of the titular “bad times.”
Fox executive Steve Asbell will oversee the project for the studio, which has a history of working with Goddard. He earned an Oscar nomination for writing Fox’s hit sci-fi movie The Martian, and he also had a hand in writing the studio’s superhero sequel Deadpool 2.
Goddard, who recently directed The Good Place pilot for NBC, also wrote a Sinister Six movie for Sony, adapted the sci-fi novel Robopocalypse, and earned an Emmy nomination for his work on ABC’s Lost. He’s represented by UTA.
