First Trailer for Netflix’s “Anne” Is Sumptuous and Wonderfully Feminist (Video)

The beloved novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is getting a new adaptation, this time from Netflix. Simply titled , the first trailer looks to be a sumptuously shot period piece — and excitingly feminist, too.

From the moment Anne Shirley Cuthbert proclaims to Marilla, “Girls can do anything a boy can do and more,” this trailer perfectly sets the tone for the series. Between newcomer Amybeth McNulty’s perfectly spunky, imaginative, and optimistic portrayal of Anne to the emphasis on individualism and female friendships (between Anne and Diana), Anne of Green Gables fans should be enchanted by this trailer.

As far as period pieces go, this one is already gorgeous. From its soft lighting to its sweeping cinematography, it’s clear this series will not only be a feast for the heart but for the eyes as well.

The series consists of eight episodes and will premiere on Netflix May 12.
