The comic book movie craze has claimed another talented director, as Gavin O’Connor is in final negotiations to write and direct SUICIDE SQUAD 2, the Tracking Board has confirmed.
I’ve been a fan of O’Connor’s since Warrior, which was one of my top three films of 2011, and one I seem to re-watch each year. In the interim, O’Connor has become a favorite on the Warner Bros. lot, as the studio has hired him to develop numerous projects over the years, including a sequel to his hit Ben Affleck movie The Accountant.
To be honest, I’m a little surprised that O’Connor would go for this sequel, as he recently pinned down the rights to Green Hornet. I was under the impression that was the superhero movie he really wanted to make, but I suppose this opportunity was simply too big to pass up.
O’Connor will pen a new draft of the script with his writing partner Anthony Tambakis, and if Warners brass is pleased, he’ll likely go on to direct Suicide Squad 2, which has flirted with a handful of directors including Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra. The latter filmmaker spurned his longtime studio home in order to direct Jungle Cruise for Disney.
O’Connor will be working with Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto on the comic book sequel, though the plot remains a mystery. He’s represented by WME, and his hiring was first reported by Deadline.
