“Get Out” Leads MTV Movie & TV Awards Nominations as Networks Breaks Ground with Non-Gendered Categories

MTV is giving their annual entertainment award show two big changes this year. For the first time, it is now the , combining both the big and small screens in the show (and in certain categories).

Secondly, the award show has created non-gendered categories for the individual awards. Now, instead of two separate categories for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Movie, six actors of any gender are nominated for Best Actor in a Movie. The nominations come the day after Billions’ actor Asia Kate Dillon challenged the Emmys’ gendered acting categories.

This is not the first time genderless categories have been brought up. Last year’s fall TCA acting awards also featured non-gendered acting categories, which was a good step. Whether or not the TCAs and MTV will pave the path for other award shows to follow in their footsteps remains to be seen, but there’s certainly an argument for them to do so.

The show will air on May 7. See the full list of nominees below.
