Stephen King’s Gunslinger and Man in Black have finally come to life in the first trailer for THE DARK TOWER, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.
The upcoming movie is based on the series of books by the celebrated author and follows a Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Elba) who is on a quest to the Dark Tower in order to, quite literally, save the entire existence of the universe. He’s joined by a young boy, Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) from Earth who stumbles upon Mid-World (the home of the Gunslinger) after having dreams about the Gunslinger and his adversary, the Man in Black, Walter Padick (McConaughey), a demonic sorcerer who seeks to rule the Dark Tower.
Writer-director Nikolaj Arcel has been open about the fact that this movie will not be a traditional adaptation of any particular book in the series. Rather, it is more of a sequel to the series — following the same characters, themes, and plot elements of the book, while going on a different journey.
The trailer looks nothing short of epic, with elements of westerns, legends, and supernatural films all rolled into one. The most exciting aspect of the trailer is Elba, who has long been overdue for a leading, heroic role like this after his excellent turns in The Wire, Luthor, Thor, and Pacific Rim. His gravitas and presence throughout the trailer prove he’s a force to be reckoned with — both for the Man in Black and his acting career.
The movie is set for release on August 4.
