Independent Spirit Awards 2017: The Complete List of Winners

If the Oscars may be considered Hollywood’s prom night where all the jocks and cheerleaders reign supreme, then the Indepedent Spirit Awards are the pre-party where all the art kids, drama geeks, and misfits are recognized for how cool they really are before they go on to be overshadowed by the popular kids at prom night.

Last night’s Spirit Awards had Nick Kroll and John Mulaney as hosts, giving on-point and hilarious commentary on the world of independent film — and the political climate, of course. After their very memorable monologue, which included numerous jabs at Trump, the night belonged to Barry Jenkins and Moonlight. The critically acclaimed coming-of-age drama won all the categories it was nominated for including Best Feature and Best Director. This may bode well for the film to pull an upset on its top competitor La La Land at the Oscars. Casey Affleck nabbed the trophy for Best Actor while Isabelle Huppert won for Best Actress. Both wins may foreshadow tonight’s winners.

Other big winners of the evening included Robert Eggers and his period horror The Witch as well as some pleasant surprises including Molly Shannon for Other People and Ben Foster for Hell or Highwater. See the complete list of winners below.
