Former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek has worked hard to shake his teen drama persona for many years, including the dark comedy The Rules of Attraction, the gritty reboot Power/Rangers, and the single camera sitcom Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23. That half hour was the biggest success for Van Der Beek, but the series was canceled too soon, depriving the world of watching the star lampoon himself and celebrity culture weekly. WHAT WOULD DIPLO DO? looks to take that style of humor to a new level. While Van Der Beek will not be playing himself, but fictional DJ who “can bring 60,000 people to their feet… but kind of sucks one-on-one.”
The series pokes fun at the rise in celebrity DJ’s and those whose ego and status grow so large they clearly have no use for their own brains anymore. As one of the side characters says in the trailer, “sometimes it feels like your head is an oven that only bakes bad ideas.” The trailer is reminiscent of last year’s feature film Pop Star and cult comedy This is Spinal Tap, clearly utilizing some improvisation and a mockumentary style while lampooning the music industry.
The series premieres on Viceland on August 3, 2017.
