The Tracking Board has confirmed that Janelle Monae and Leslie Mann have been tapped to star opposite Steve Carell in director Robert Zemeckis’ latest film for Universal Pictures, which is currently untitled.
The film tells the story of a broken man (Carell) who discovers the power of artistic imagination and how it can restore the human spirit. It’s unclear who Monae and Mann will be playing, but both are talented and versatile actors, making their casting exciting regardless.
Zemeckis co-wrote the screenplay with Caroline Thompson and will also produce the film. Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke of Zemeckis’ Universal-based production banner ImageMovers will co-produce alongside Cherylanne Martin. Jeff Malmberg, who directed the 2010 documentary upon which this film is based, will executive produce with Jackie Levine.
VP of production Maradith Frenkel and Director of Development Chloe Yellin will oversee for the studio.
Monae made her acting debut in two films last year, Moonlight and Hidden Figures, to critical acclaim, both for the films themselves and her performances. She’s repped by WME and Wondaland Entertainment.
Mann is a prolific actor, most recently appearing in the 2016 films How to Be Single and The Comedian, and currently in production with the Universal comedy The Pact alongside Ike Barinholtz and John Cena. She’s repped by CAA.
