Jodie Whittaker Named Thirteenth “Doctor Who” (Video)

has revealed the identity of the thirteenth iteration of : , who becomes the first woman to ever play the iconic role.

Fans have been clamoring for the identity of the new Doctor ever since , the 12th Doctor, announced he was leaving the show in January.

The rumored names that emerged over the months have included Kris Marshall, Luke Treadaway and Sacha Dhawan. Fans hoping for a female Doctor – indeed, the first female Doctor in the franchise’s decades-long history – floated names like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Tilda Swinton and Miranda Hart, though hope seemed to be dwindling in recent days as rumors indicated producers were settling on ye another white male doctor. But all was not lost!

Whittaker was announced in a video Sunday afternoon UK time, following the conclusion of the Wimbledon Men’s Finals on . She is best known for her roles in Broadchurch, Attack the Block and Black Mirror.

In addition to Capaldi, showrunner is also leaving the show after shepherding it since 2010. He will be replaced by Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall.
