As you might’ve guessed back in February, JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 is on its way, as Lionsgate is bringing back original scribe Derek Kolstad to line up a new group of victims for Keanu Reeves’ vengeful assassin, the Tracking Board has confirmed.
The latest sequel is being fast-tracked to start production this fall, but like everything else — including the director — it’ll all come down to the script.
Chad Stahelski co-directed the first John Wick with David Leitch before directing Chapter 2 on his own. Though he’s not attached to direct Chapter 3 just yet, he’ll work with Kolstad to develop the script. If it affords Stahelski the opportunity to up the ante on this action franchise, I imagine he’ll return behind the camera. But that’s easier said than done, as Chapter 2 was one of the most badass action movies I’ve seen from a studio in years, with a body count as impressive as its electronic soundtrack.
Basil Iwanyk is returning to produce Chapter 3, though plot details are being kept somewhere inside the Continental Hotel. It’s wise of Lionsgate to keep this creative team intact, because in Hollywood, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
The original John Wick grossed $88 million worldwide back in 2014, while John Wick: Chapter 2 capitalized on fans’ goodwill towards the first film, taking in $166 million worldwide.
Kolstad has been focused on all things John Wick since writing the first film on spec. He wrote the VR video game John Wick: Chronicles and is consulting on a John Wick comic book that should come out before the holidays. He’s represented by APA and Circle of Confusion, and the Hollywood Reporter broke the news of his hiring.
