Brolin plays Thanos within the MCU but that’s a motion-capture/voice role in which the Oscar-nominated actor’s true face is never seen onscreen. As Cable, he’ll be front and center in Deadpool 2 alongside Ryan Reynolds’ titular anti-hero. Reynolds hasn’t weighed in on Twitter yet, but we’ll update this post when he does. (Update 2:30 p.m.: Reynolds confirmed Brolin’s casting on Twitter, as seen below.)
Red-hot off the SXSW buzz surrounding Atomic Blonde, David Leitch is directing the superhero sequel, which will co-star Atlanta breakout Zazie Beetz as Domino — another role that, like Cable, was hotly contested in Hollywood.
Recent reports pegged Michael Shannon and David Harbour as the frontrunners to play Cable, while Brad Pitt also met to discuss the part, though it was not to be. At the time, sources said it was because Pitt was reluctant to sign a multi-picture deal that called for as many as five films. Brolin’s deal is reportedly for four movies — an issue that was surely a point of contention during negotiations.
20th Century Fox is gearing up to start production this June in Vancouver, and the internet is surely waiting for the first photos of Brolin in costume to leak from the set, not that we condone such looky-loos.
Brolin is poised for a huge fall this year and possible awards recognition, as he stars in the firefighter drama Granite Mountain, the Sicario sequel Soldado, and George Clooney’s Suburbicon. The CAA-repped actor also has Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War on the horizon in 2018.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Brolin’s casting.
