“Mr. Robot” Creator Sam Esmail to Adapt “Metropolis” Into Miniseries

Fritz Lang’s iconic 1927 film METROPOLIS is headed to television with at the helm. The Mr. Robot creator is developing a miniseries based on the sci-fi film at Universal Cable Productions.

The project is in the early stages of development and the studio is looking to release the miniseries in the next two to three years. The television adaptation will follow the story of the original film which takes place in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast city from high-rise tower complexes, while a lower class of underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that provide its power. Risking everything they know, two star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the whole system.

Esmail will serve as executive producer alongside Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content. The writers’ room for the miniseries is said to be a “concept room” and will consist of two or three writers. They will focus less on writing scripts and more on figuring out conceptually how the movie could be adapted into an episodic series.

Esmail was nominated or two Emmys for Mr. Robot in 2015. He is currently working on the third season of the drama starring Rami Malek which will premiere next year.
