On Friday, the hot new spec MOTHER from Underground creator Misha Green hit the market and later that evening, streaming giant Netflix acquired the project in an intense bidding war, the Tracking Board has confirmed. The deal for the project, which focuses on a female lead in an action role, came just as Wonder Woman, the first female-led superhero film in many years, premiered.
With franchise potential, the project follows a female protagonist in the vein of The Professional and La Femme Nikita. With the recent success of Wonder Woman shattering records and glass ceilings, as well as earlier success stories of films like Lucy and The Hunger Games, this is a timely and in-demand project, with women front and center both in front of and behind the camera.
Roy Lee will co-produce the project alongside Green. CAA brokered this deal for Netflix and Deadline was the first to break the news.
Green is primarily known as the creator of the WGN series Underground. Coming up, she’s been tapped to showrun and write the Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams series Lovecraft Country, which has found a home at HBO. She also has a teen ghost feature project in development at Paramount. She’s repped by CAA.
