Nicholas Hoult will be starring in Danny Strong’s biopic, REBEL IN THE RYE, as enigmatic and reclusive author J.D. Salinger. BLOOM will be handling international sales next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, while CAA will handle the sales in North America. Strong’s script, which he will also direct, is based on the Kenneth Slawenski biography, J.D. Salinger: A Life. Black Label Media is financing, and Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill are producing alongside Bruce Cohen, Jason Shuman, and Danny Strong.
The film follows the life of the iconic 20th century writer starting with his youth and following him through WWII, his early writing career, his PTSD-induced writer’s block and the epiphanies that followed. Alex Walton of BLOOM has stated, “The Catcher in the Rye is a classic coming of age story which continues to make a significant impression six generations later. The world has long been fascinated with JD Salinger, who the talented Nicholas Hoult will bring to life, in this enigmatic role.”
Hoult is repped by UTA and 42.
