Octavia E. Butler’s Sci-fi Novel “Dawn” Getting the TV Treatment from Ava Duvernay

Award-winning science fiction novel DAWN by Octavia E. Butler has been scooped up by Ava DuVernay and ’s Macro and for a television series adaptation.

The story centers on an African American woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war. Dawn, published in 1987, is the first novel in the Xenogenesis series, followed by Adulthood Rites and Imago.

Mahoney will write the series. She is best known for her debut feature Yelling to the Sky. More recently she has helmed episodes of Power, Gypsy, American Crime, and Queen Sugar.

DuVernay and King will executive produce with Kim Roth, Poppy Hanks, Allen Bain, Gary Pearl, Thomas L. Carter, and Teddy Smith. Macro produces with Forward Movement, Bainframe, and Oil & Cattle.
