Sundance’s hip-hop hit PATTI CAKE$ has its first trailer and it is everything you wanted and more.
Directed by Geremy Jasper, the film stars breakout Aussie actress Danielle Macdonald as Patricia Dombrowski (a.k.a. the titular Patti Cake$), an aspiring rapper living in Jersey strip mall suburbia. The premise of “white girl wants to be a rapper” could easily stray into silly, absurd Malibu Most Wanted territory — or even worse: it could veer into a narrative of cultural appropriation — but the spirited trailer tells us otherwise.
The film was reportedly getting non-stop standing ovations at Sundance and it has been getting love during its festival run. The trailer amps up the movie even more, giving us some 8-Mile realness with a mix of humor and heart. It seems less of a movie about hip-hop and more of a coming-of-age story about a misfit girl trying to find her voice. Add under-the-radar comedic actress Bridget Everett to the mix as Patti Cake$’ mom and a dope soundtrack and you have a film worthy of your excitement.
