Penelope Cruz to Play Donatella Versace in Ryan Murphy’s FX Series “Versace: American Crime Story”

Oscar-winning actress Penélope Cruz is heading to the small screen, as she’s set to play Donatella Versace in Ryan Murphy’s latest FX series , it was announced Monday.

The limited series chronicles the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was Donatella’s beloved brother.

Versace: American Crime Story will be produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions, and executive produced by Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. It will be the third installment of the award-winning series following The People vs. O.J. Simpson and Katrina.

Production is scheduled to start in April, as Versace is slated to air in 2018.

Coincidentally, Cruz was once poised to star in another project about a slain fashion icon, as she was in line to play Maurizio Gucci’s ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani in the Ridley Scott-produced movie Gucci.

Cruz, who won an Oscar for her supporting turn in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, most recently co-starred in Zoolander 2 and The Brothers Grimsby. She’s poised for a big year thanks to roles opposite husband Javier Bardem in Escobar and Johnny Depp in Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express.
