Doctor Who Announces New Companion Pearl Mackie
Jenna Coleman departed Doctor Who midway through last season, leaving the 12th Doctor to fend for himself through the series finale. While Peter Capaldi will be staying on to play the Doctor for a few more seasons, everyone wondered who his new companion would be. The BBC announced this weekend that British theatrical actress Pearl Mackie would be the Doctor’s companion for season 10. Her character’s name will be Bill, and she and the Doctor meet while fighting Daleks. While season 10 will be Mackie’s first season, it will be Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffatt’s final season. He is retiring from the series and handing the reigns over to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.
Alicia Vikander to Star in Tomb Raider Reboot
Alicia Vikander is Hollywood’s newest breakout star. After scoring leading roles in Ex Machina, Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Danish Girl, and the upcoming Jason Bourne, Vikander is one of the most in demand actresses in Hollywood. Now she can add Lara Croft to her list of breakout roles, as she will be playing her in MGM’s Tomb Raider reboot. The first two Tomb Raider films starred Angelina Jolie as the intrepid Croft, and now Vikander will be carrying on her legacy. While little is known about the film, it is definitely moving ahead with this casting announcement. Roar Uthag is directing the pic with a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
New Ghostbusters Promo Features Chris Hemsworth
Thor may not be swinging his hammer in Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War, but Chris Hemsworth will be swinging plenty of paperwork in Sony’s upcoming Ghostbusters film. Hemsworth is playing the only male character in the film with a significant supporting role. His character, Kevin, plays the team’s receptionist. As you can tell from the video above, he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. While I may be partial to Thor, Kevin may be my new favorite Hemsworth role. It would appear that he’ll be adding even more delightful comedic relief to the film.
Full Cast for Twin Peaks Revealed
David Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival has finally released the full cast for the new series. The revival has slowly been adding numerous cast members from the original series, as well actors and actresses who have worked with Lynch on other projects. This week Showtime released the entire cast and crew list, which includes almost 217 actors. The list includes Michael Cera, Jim Belushi, Naomi Watts, Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Tim Roth, David Duchovny and dozens more. The series will take place 25 years after the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer. The full cast list can be see here.
Wolverine 3 Adds Two New Cast Members
Two actors were announced to be joining Hugh Jackman in the third installment of his solo Wolverine films. The Office and Hello Ladies actor/creator Stephen Merchant will be joining the film, along side Doctor Who and Dowton Abbey actor Richard E. Grant. While Merchant’s role is being kept under wraps, Grant is said to playing a mad scientist. Since Wolverine 3 takes place in the Marvel universe, it’s possible Grant could be playing Professor Andre Thorton or Abraham Cornelius. Both characters played significant roles in the Old Man Logan comics. Merchant and Grant join previously cast Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, as well as the film’s main villain, Narcos‘ Boyd Hollbrook.
Wolverine 3 opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
Final X-Men Apocalypse Trailer Debuts
The end is near as Apocalypse and his Horsemen rise, and the X-Men are ready to answer his call. This new trailer, considered the final trailer before the film debuts this Memorial Day weekend, uncovers the true reason the X-Men need to assemble. Professor Xavier has been taken, and his students, led by Mystique, need to band together to rescue him. Family allegiance is also tested as both Nightcrawler and Quicksilver discover their true parentage. As Apocalypse seeks to bring the world to its knees, he’s going to have to get through this team of gifted youngsters — and a man you may recognize with three very distinct metal claws.
X-Men Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
Sherlock Holmes 3 Moves Ahead with New Screenwriter
Sherlock Holmes 3 is finally moving forward, as Warner Bros. announced this week that screenwriter Jame Coyne will take over the project. Coyne is a relatively unknown writer, having gained recognition with his Warner Bros./Black List script Treasure Island. Coyne takes over from Drew Pearce, whose most recent writing credits include Iron Man 3 and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. While Sherlock Holmes 3 is still in early pre-production, Warner Bros. is confident that Guy Ritchie, Jude Law, and Robert Downey Jr. will all return for the film.
Mads Mikkelsen’s Star Wars Rogue One Role Revealed
Mads Mikkelsen might be playing a mysterious villain in Marvel’s Doctor Strange come Novermber, but he also has a role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While very little is known about any of the characters in the film, it would appear that Mikkelsen is playing Jyn Erso’s father. Erso — the lead character in the film, played by The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones — is tasked with recovering the secret layout of the Death Star. If Erso says in the trailer that she’s been on her own since her teenage years, it’s possible Mikkelsen will only be revealed in flashback, or they will come face to face in a reunion of sorts. Either way, it’s refreshing to get a bit of insight into a film whose plot and characters are being kept tightly under wraps.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16, 2016.
