How To Be Single star Rebel Wilson is attached to star in the MGM remake of the classic comedy DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. Roger Birnbaum will produce through his Pin High Productions along with Wilson. Former Young & Hungry List writer Jac Schaeffer is penning the screenplay.
The original film, directed by Frank Oz, centers on con artist Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) who is a longtime resident of a luxurious coastal resort, where he enjoys the fruits of his deceptions — that is, until a competitor, Freddy Benson (Steve Martin), shows up. When the new guy’s lowbrow tactics impinge on his own work, Jamieson resolves to get rid of him. Confident of his own duplicitous talents, Jamieson challenges Benson to a winner-takes-all competition: whoever swindles their latest mark first can stay, while the other must leave town.
The updated remake will have a modern take on the story, with two female ‘scoundrels’ – one low rent and one high class – competing to con a naive tech prodigy out of his fortune.
The remake was previously in the works at Columbia Pictures with Arthur Sarkissian set to produce.
Wilson, who can currently be seen in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, is the Australian comedic actress who made waves in comedies Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect, and Pitch Perfect 2. She is currently in preproduction with Pitch Perfect 3 and is writing a comedy with Universal.
Wilson is repped by WME.
