(Spoiler warning: Do not read on if you have not watched Wednesday night’s Season 2 premiere episode of Riverdale, entitled “A Kiss Before Dying.”)
RIVERDALE Season 2 is officially underway and the show wasted no time in proving just how much darker it’s about to get.
After Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) miraculously survived the gunshot wound inflicted upon him by a mysterious shooter who ambushed him at Pop’s in last season’s finale, we now come to find out this isn’t just a killer, it’s a serial killer.
In the final moments of the season premiere episode, Archie’s (KJ Apa) erstwhile music teacher/lover Geraldine Grundy (Sarah Habel) was seen living in nearby Greendale, up to her old tricks, teaching piano and romancing underage boys. But not for long.
Even though the mysterious would-be killer didn’t quit finish the job on Fred, he does with Grundy, sneaking up behind her in her own home and choking her to death — with what appears to be her own cello bow. If we recall back to last season, that bow was a gift from Archie Andrews himself.
So what do Fred Andrews and Geraldine Grundy have in common? Archie, of course. Remember, we don’t know exactly who the shooter was aiming at in Pop’s, only that Fred ended up on the receiving end of the bullet in the confrontation. Could the killer have been aiming for Archie instead?
And who would have cause to try to hurt Archie and Grundy? Perhaps the abusive ex-husband she ran away from, according to her own testimony. We never met the man, though he certainly seems like the most obvious suspect here. But is it too obvious?
Remember, there were theories last season that the unnamed ex was responsible for Jason Blossom’s killing — perhaps mistaking the ginger football player for his wife’s underage boyfriend.
That turned out to not be the case, so this could certainly be a red herring as well, but it’s too tantalizing – and just too glaring – a prospect not to discuss.
Who do you think Riverdale’s mysterious new killer is?
The Archie comic book adaptation airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
