Oscar-winning actor Sissy Spacek is making the most out of the amount of content being produced by streaming networks, having already co-starred on Netflix’s Bloodline and playing a key role in Hulu’s upcoming Castle Rock series. Even before the latter series is released, Spacek has just signed on to Amazon Studios’ HOMECOMING, playing Julia Roberts’ mother in the half=hour series from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.
The series is based on the fictional Gimlet Media podcast, a half-hour psychological and political thriller centering on Roberts’ Heidi, a soldier and caseworker at a secret government facility who is trying to adjust to life as a civilian.
Spacek takes on the recurring role as Ellen Bergman, Heidi’s mother, a “no-nonsense, somewhat crabby woman who is fiercely protective of her daughter.”
The cast already includes Bobby Cannavale, Stephan James, Dermont Mulroney, Alex Karpovsky, Shea Whigham, Jeremy Allen White and Marianne Jean-Baptiste and otheres.
The series is written and exec. produced by podcast creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, and it’s exec. produced by Roberts with Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content, Alicia Van Couvering, and Gimlet Media’s Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber. Esmail will direct the series himself with the series set-up with a two-season order after Amazon won the rights in a competitive situation.
Ms. Spacek is an acclaimed and respected acting veteran who got her start in the ’70s with films like Terrence Malick’s Badlands, Brian de Palma’s Carrie and The Coal Miner’s Daughter, for which she won an Oscar before being nominated four more times. Spacek transitioned into television in 2010 for the HBO series Big Love, for which she received a third Emmy nomination. Repped by UTA and MGMT Entertainment, Spacek will next be seen in David Lowery’s Old Man and the Gun opposite Robert Redford.
