Steve Coogan Becomes “Despicable”

British actor will be lending his voice to Universal’s upcoming sequel .

Details about the animated film are being kept under wraps but Steve Carell is set to return as Gru, a super-villain who has a change of heart when he adopts three children. Kristin Wiig, Russell Brand, and Miranda Cosgrove are also reprising their roles. Al Pacino has been cast as the villain in Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud-directed pic. Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.

Coogan, who played egotistical director Damien Cockburn in Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder,” also starred in “Hamlet 2” and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.” More recently, Coogan has appeared opposite Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in “The Other Guys” and has a small role in “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci’s cross-Atlantic laugher “In the Loop.” He just wrapped filming on Michael Winterbottom’s “King of Soho” and will next be seen with Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas in “Ruby Sparks” from the directing team behind “Little Miss Sunshine.”
