20th Century Fox has snapped up John J. Griffin’s spec script Crater, and not only is Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) set to produce via his 21 Laps banner, but he’s in talks to direct as well, the Tracking Board has confirmed.
Crater is described as a coming-of-age story set on the moon. It follows a boy living a lunar mining colony who, after the death of his father, takes a trip with his four best friends to explore a mysterious crater prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.
Levy will produce with his 21 Laps partner Dan Levine, while VFX veteran Rpin Suwannath will serve as an executive producer, having originally conceived of the idea before teaming up with Griffin to flesh out the story. Levy brought Crater to Fox with the idea that he’d develop the project as a potential directing vehicle for himself, and it wasn’t long before it became Griffin’s first sale to a major studio.
Paris Latsis, Terry Dougas and Gordon Gray will also executive produce the film, which will be overseen by Kira Goldberg on behalf of 20th Century Fox and Emily Morris on behalf of 21 Laps.
Crater may sound familiar to those in the development community, as the script was voted #1 on the 2015 Hit List. WME packaged the spec, as it represents Levy, Griffin, Suwannath, Latsis, Dougas, and Gray. Griffin is also repped by Grandview and attorney David Matlof.
The news was first reported by Variety.
