Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired all international rights, excluding France, to Debra Granik’s father-daughter drama  starring Ben Foster and newcomer Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, the company announced Sunday.

The deal excludes North America, though there are several buyers circling domestic rights to the film, which received solid reviews following its world premiere on Saturday night.

Presented by Bron Creative and Topic Studios, Leave No Trace follows a teenage girl and her father who have lived undetected for years in Forest Park, a vast woods on the edge of Portland, Oregon. A chance encounter leads to their discovery and removal from the park, and into the charge of a social service agency. They try to adapt to their new surroundings, until a sudden decision sets them on a perilous journey into the wilderness seeking complete independence. The duo are forced to confront their conflicting desire to be part of a community and fierce need to live apart.

Granik co-wrote the script with her Winter’s Bone collaborator Anne Rosellini, and they based the script on Peter Rock’s novel “My Abandonment.” Rosellini also produced the film with Anne Harrison and Linda Reisman, while Michael Bloom, Adam Pincus and Bron Creative’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth and Andy Pollack served as executive producers.

“This movie has been such an extraordinary part of my life for so long. I’m so grateful to Sony for making it possible for this film to circulate and create a dialogue with storytellers and film lovers around the world,” said Granik.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by Endeavor Content and Bron’s Adam Davids and Anjay Nagpal, while SPWA’s Michael Helfand and Jon Freedberg negotiated the deal for Sony. THR broke the news.
