Season 1, Episode 20 – When Maya finds out J.J. ran away from home, she puts the running away in her own hands, justifying J.J.’s anger in an impressive episode of Speechless. With a few episodes before the first season ends, it’s obvious this is a series wanting to say serious things about independence and respect.
Season 1, Episode 19 – It started like yet another bad episode of Speechless – obvious setups, poorly drawn characters, and of all things, Ray involved in a pyramid scheme – but a change in tone regarding J.J.’s future brings a needed dose of reality to the series.
Season 1, Episode 18 – Yikes. Speechless goes to the grocery store, and the result is the worst episode of the season. Ray and Maya dispute about a car dent, Dylan and Jimmy steal soda, and J.J. is a human roadblock for a bad guy. Oh, and you won’t believe how Kenneth is shoehorned into this.
Season 1, Episode 17 – It’s Dylan’s birthday, which means Maya is ready to surprise her with a huge party. Meanwhile Ray loses J.J. out in public, and Jimmy and Kenneth fight about barbecue. Like other weak Speechless episodes, this one jumps through a few too many hoops.
Season 1, Episode 16 – It’s Oscar night at the DiMeo house, which is bad news for Speechless. Too many plots, too many poorly drawn characters and a lack of clever storytelling makes for a cringe-worthy episode of an otherwise good show.
Season 1, Episode 15 – It’s a welcome return to form for Speechless, with fine chemistry and character development. Ray finds a home at a country club, while J.J. and Kenneth have a fight about the aide’s free time.
Season 1, Episode 14 – After a couple weeks off, Speechless comes back with an cute but ineffective episode about Valentine’s Day that tries to pack in too much. J.J. eats too much candy, Ray gets his heart broken, and Maya and Jimmy attempt to re-heat their marriage.
Season 1, Episode 13 – Nearly everyone comes down with a bad cold in Speechless, which slows everything down for the DiMeo family. But everyone tries to do their part, from Jimmy taking over Maya’s mom duties, to Dylan reading J.J.’s board for an ailing Kenneth. Some of it works, some of it doesn’t, but the result is a terrific episode.
Season 1, Episode 12 – J.J. is back in the spotlight this week on Speechless, becoming a hero to some high school kid, but Ray has trouble accepting that his own brother could be an inspiration. Maya and Jimmy have trouble securing a good wheelchair for their son, so they take it to the track – in more ways than one.
Season 1, Episode 11 – The first half of Speechless tells a tale of a family vacation gone boring, and of characters gone cartoonish. Then the act break happened. This week the DiMeos go all in for a member of the family who suffers a terrible fate, and Kenneth finds his place in the sun.
Season 1, Episode 10 – In the third holiday episode for Speechless, the family seeks the best Christmas ever. Obstacles stand in their way, including the loss of their vital wheelchair van. Meanwhile, Ray and J.J. battle over the solo spot in the school choir. But like Ray, this episode isn’t in the right key.
Season 1, Episode 9 – J.J. is tired of being patronized in athletic competition, so Jimmy tries to take matters into his own hands in this week’s episode of Speechless. Season 1, Episode 8 – Ray just wants to get away, but the family can’t seem to get him to the boat on time, in this week’s terrific episode of Speechless. Meanwhile, J.J. tries to reel in a catch, and Dylan and Jimmy scheme to make poor parents pay big bucks for holiday gifts.
Season 1, Episode 7 – It’s the tale of two halves in this week’s Thanksgiving episode of Speechless. Jimmy’s brother comes over with his family, which leads to a fun game that takes up the first act. Then turkeys are charred, secrets are revealed and televisions are bought. And it doesn’t quite feel like Speechless.
Season 1, Episode 6 – Maya’s drinking sangria with a mom group? Ray’s trying to hang with teens who watch MMA? Few things go right this week on Speechless, in an episode that throws a lot out there with little execution. At least we have one of the finest comedic dynamics on television.
Season 1, Episode 5 – It’s the Speechless Halloween episode! The DiMeo family has a tradition of dressing up together for Halloween, but the tradition is threatened by teenage wants and needs. Watch J.J. get drunk, and Ray grow heartbroken, while Maya allows Jimmy to pierce his ear and listen to ’90s ska.
Season 1, Episode 4 – Somehow Speechless is able to make stories about J.J. not actually be about him. In “I-n-s-Inspirations,” Kenneth takes a day out with J.J. too far, while the rest of the DiMeo family tries out life without the oldest child, and wonders if they’re allowed to have fun.
