{TB EXCLUSIVE} George C. Wolfe To Helm “In The Heights”

has taken over directing duties from Kenny Ortega for Universal’s planned adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical . Ortega has recently signed on to helm the “Dirty Dancing” remake.

The film, which will feature members of the Broadway cast including co-writer of the original play Lin-Manuel Miranda, is about three days in the heavily Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. Ruben Blades and David Del Rio have also agreed to star in the Marc Klein adaptation.

Mega-stars, such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Demi Lovato, has also been mentioned with regards to casting.

Miranda will produce with Meryl Poster. Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller, and Jill Furman are serving as executive producers.

Wolfe, a prominent Broadway director and Tony winner for “Angels in America: Millenium Approaches,” is also known staging Anna Deavere Smith’s “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992″ and Suzan-Lori Parks’ “Top Dog/Underdog.” His previous film efforts include Richard Gere/Diane Lane romance “Nights in Rodanthe.”
