{TB EXCLUSIVE} QUANTIC DREAM’S KARA — A NEW VIDEO THAT IS ABOUT TO GET A LOT OF BUZZ IN HOLLYWOOD!

QUANTIC DREAM’S: KARA

The new short film from writer/director that is about to hit Hollywood by storm!

  • Deke

Nice animation, but wasn’t this a film called AI some years ago?  Why will this take Hollywood by storm?

    • Tracking Board

The buzz it’s getting from agencies already is crazy!

  • Ethan

What is the point of this, and how close of friends are you with the guy who made it to hype something so pointless and bad, so much?  This looks like a bad game opening.  Are you serious??

    • Tracking Board

Don’t know the guy at all.

  • wha?

Agree with the others so far… Pretty generic computer generated stuff.  And not elevated by the writing or performance.  I don’t get the big deal.  It’s a static, locked off shot for the most part, with some bad CGI machines moving through it.

  • Mojo

The concept is OLD, seen it, read it a million times.  The animation is sub-par, and the VO is even less than great.

Sorry, man.  Not trying to be hater.  Just wondering — what’s the big deal?

    • Tracking Board

I think the reason for all the hype behind it is the idea behind it. It’s a fantastic prequel (fully imagined) for a studio project. High concept potential done in a low concept platform. Using what’s available in a video game console to create it as well, also shows the writer/director has a level of creativity and design you’re not seeing everyday. At it’s core – it’s new, it’s a great story (which the girl’s VO and the score take to the next level) and it is, as I’d mentioned high concept potential shown with low concept needs.

If it’s a TB exclusive why is it on you tube, isn’t that a ‘open to the whole world’ web site?

Hmmm. I’m pretty sure I saw this video a few years ago. It’s from the team that did “Heavy Rain” for PS3.

  • joel__k

It is from Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream. They are demoing a new gaming engine. The animation is realtime using motion capture data. Facial and body performances were recorded separately.

That combo could take Hollywood by storm for previz and eventually animated movie making. It’s easy to imagine in a few years screenwriters creating their own sophisticated animated movies somewhat easily using advanced game engines and libraries of mocap data. Very cool!

  • Tellytoo

Sorry Joel, NOTHING about this short or the company is taking anything by storm.  This technology has been around for ages and is already used in previz. This short is horrible..

    • Tracking Board

      Directly from the director:

This film is brand new, completed in February 2012. The brand new software (next level motion capture) is also brand new, and “never before seen”. Whether that is in “real time” or what have you, I am not sure – but that is how it is hitting the market, and where all the buzz (aside from being an amazing short film) is stemming from.

It appears they are taking what Hollywood does at the highest levels (Avatar) and bringing it to real time on PS3 – which is a weak platform at this point. So I’ll concede you’re right in saying there’s probably nothing there for Hollywood.

      But the short is “horrible”?

Just checking the Disqus, Youtube and Facebook threads I could quickly find they don’t read like most people think it’s horrible. Seems to be about 25:1 like to dislike.

I’m pretty sure most 45 year old women hate it, but I doubt it’s horrible to any 20-something gamer.  It helps to calibrate with the target market before rendering judgement.

And hey, not everything can be as good as CSI!!!! lol.
