{TB EXCLUSIVE} Tom Hanks Adds A Second job on “EDGAR SAWTELLE”

, who is already aboard to produce the upcoming novel adaptation via his Playtone production company, has now also agreed to star as the young Edgar Sawtelle’s father.

The project, which is based on the award-winning, and “Oprah Book Club” (Oprah is also a producer) novel by David Wroblewski, centers on the mute teenager, Edgar Sawtelle, who lives on a farm in Wisconsin with a family that’s raised a coveted breed of dog for generations. When Sawtelle’s father dies mysteriously after his uncle comes to stay with the family, the teen runs away with three of his dogs.

Wentworth Miller was recently brought in to rewrite William Broyles’s draft, and “The King’s Speech” director Tom Hooper is attached to direct. Joining Hanks and Winfrey as producers are Kate Forte and Gary Goetzman. Universal will finance and distribute.

Hanks most recently appeared onscreen in “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and “Larry Crowne” (which he also wrote, produced and directed). He will next appear in the ambitious new film from the Wachowski’s and Tom Tykwer “Cloud Atlas”.
