Oscar-winning and nominated actors Emma Stone and Steve Carell take on the roles of legendary tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, respectively, in the first trailer for Fox Searchlight’s BATTLE OF THE SEXES.
The film tells the story of the second Battle of the Sexes tennis match, which pitted a male and female player against one another. After winning his first match against Margaret Court in 1973, Riggs continued his tirade against the female sport as the inferior game, prompting King to play against him later the same year in a televised match.
The trailer has a fun, comical tone, especially as it paints Riggs as a cartoonish, sexist villain — at one point he literally says he’s going to put the “show” back in “chauvinistic.” However, it will curious to see how directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, whose debut was the critically acclaimed Little Miss Sunshine, handles the nuances and seriousness of the times particularly in regards to feminism and sexuality. King was and continues to be an advocate for gender equality and in 1981, while still married to Larry King (they would divorce in 1987; played by Austin Stowell in the movie), she became the first prominent professional female athlete to come out as a lesbian, most of the which the trailer hints at as a larger part of its narrative.
The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Sarah Silverman and Alan Cumming.
Battle of the Sexes is slated to come out September 22.
