The Complete List of 2017 Tony Award Nominations

The Great CometChad Batka

As the lines between Hollywood and Broadway become more and more blurred, with several movie adaptations of hit musicals in development and as talented stars cross over between stage and screen, Christopher Jackson and Jane Krakowski announced the nominations for the 2017 Tuesday morning.

The electropop musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, based on a sliver of Leo Tolstoy’s War & Peace led the pack with 12 nominations, which came as something of a surprise as many expected the Bette Midler-led revival of Hello, Dolly! to snag the most. However, it wasn’t far behind with 10 nominations. The critically acclaimed musical Dear Evan Hansen starring Ben Platt came away with 9 nods.

Some of the biggest snubs include Anastasia, the musical based on the 1997 Fox animated film, which came away with only two nominations, and War Paint starring Patti LuPone, which only snagged four nominations, including one for LuPone. Neither was nominated for Best Musical, even though the Tonys had the option of expanding the category from four nods to five.

On the non-musical side of things, big names like Cate Blanchett, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline, and Nathan Lane all came away with nominations for their performances in various plays.

However, for an award show that prided itself on its diversity last year, this year is disappointingly less so.

The show will take place on June 11 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Kevin Spacey on CBS. See the full list of nominations below.
