There was a lot of chatter last year when it was reported that Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbegh was going to make a film entirely shot using an iPhone.
The first trailer for that movie, the psychological thriller UNSANE, is finally here, ahead of its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and its theatrical release by Fingerprint Releasing and Bleecker Street on March 23.
Unsane stars Claire Foy, the breakout Golden Globe-winning star of Netflix’s The Crown, as a woman who has been plagued by a stalker, but things get even worse when she’s involuntarily committed to a mental institution.
Written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the film also stars Joshua Leonard, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, Jay Pharaoh and Amy Irving.
Unsane follows Soderbergh’s 2017 release Logan Lucky, which didn’t make particularly big waves despite being his first theatrical release in four years after taking a hiatus. His previous movie Side Effects was also a psychological thriller starring Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum, but one that was made in a more traditional way.
The fact that Unsane was filmed using an iPhone — sorry, we’re not sure which model — made it seem like Unsane would be a lower-budget indie film like the ones Soderbergh has done in between Ocean’s 11 movies. (2oo5’s Bubble began the initiative that led to 2009’s The Girlfriend Experience starring porn star Sasha Grey, which in turn led to a hit series for STARZ.)
From the trailer, which you can watch below, Soderbergh’s latest looks pretty damn good, showing what a trained and skilled cinematographer can do with an iPhone camera.
