20th Century Fox has releaesd the first official trailer for and Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, starring  Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

Based on the manga series by Yukito Kishiro, the comics were popular in the ’90s having been translated and published in America. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic future where a doctor finds a cyborg in a trash heap and proceeds to rebuild her, as she tries to figure out her own past as a bounty hunter.

The film is directed by Rodriguez (Sin City) with a screenplay by Cameron, Rodriguez and Laeta Kalogridis. Cameron and Jon Landau’s Lightstorm Entertainment produced the film along with Rodriguez.

This will be the second recent attempt to adapt a manga into a live action action film for American audiences following Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson earlier this year. That failed to find favor with critics or audiences and was considered one of the year’s early bombs.

Fox will release Alita: Battle Angel  on July 20 in regular, 3D and IMAX theaters.
