THE RUNWAY – YOUR 2017 PILOT SURVIVAL GUIDE: ABC COMEDIES

tbRUNWAY630x190

New ABC Network president Channing Dungey had an important decision last year: greenlight more family comedies or add other types of comedy to their strong lineup. She went with a bit of both, giving series orders to family comedies American Housewife and Speechless, as well as high-concept comedies Imagining Mary and Downward Dog. The former two have done well and will likely be renewed, the latter two have either not aired yet (Downward Dog) or disappointed (Imagining Mary).

That doesn’t make things any easier for Dungey this year. They are literally bursting at the seams with family comedies. Sure, The Real O’Neals is likely canceled, but with American Housewife and Speechless likely returning, there’s probably only room for a small number of pick-ups, with half or more getting pushed to mid-season. Yet there are a ton of comedy pilots in play at ABC this year, which makes it seem like all comedies will be getting shorter seasons or Sundays might be flipping from drama to comedy.

Regardless, we’re back to the same question as last year: add more family comedies or try to branch out? Or just go with the highest quality? Let’s look at them and find out…
