Hulu is developing an adaptation of THE WANGS VS THE WORLD, based on the novel of the same name by Jade Chang, Tracking Board has confirmed.
Jon M. Chu is executive producing the half-hour project, which Chang will adapt herself and which is in early development
The story follows a crazy rich Asian family who lose it all and embark on a road trip at the behest of the patriarch of the family, Charles, a Chinese immigrant who made it big in the cosmetics industry but now can’t afford the family’s Bel-Air home or any of the private schools his children were attending. The family sets out for the upstate New York home of oldest daughter Saina, as Charles dreams of returning to China to reclaim his ancestral lands and his former glory days.
Bridget Bedard will also serve as an EP alongside Chu – who would direct the pilot should it be ordered. The project hails from Michael London’s Groundswell Productions.
Chu is also behind Warner Bros’ Crazy Rich Asians, the first Asian-led studio film since The Joy Luck Club in 1993. He is represented by UTA, Principato Young and Stone Genow.
