“This Is Us” Season 2 Clip: The Truth About Randall’s Adoption Revealed (Video)

The first scene from the Season 2 premiere of THIS IS US has been released, and yes, it’s a tearjerker.

In present day, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) confides in Rebecca (Mandy Moore) that Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) is struggling with the idea of adoption, and pushes his mom to reveal exactly how she and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) decided to adopt him.

“It’s complicated,” she says, a red flag if there ever was one.

Cut to 1980, the night the Big Three became the Big Three, and we see that indeed, Jack was the one who was enthusiastic about adopting baby Randall after their third triplet died, and Rebecca had to be pushed into the idea.

After showing the clip to journalists earlier this month at the Television Critics’ Association’s summer press tour, showrunner Dan Fogelman revealed that the heart-wrenching scene was just one of many big moments to come in the season premiere and that there would be plenty of twists and turns to come.

This Is Us was renewed for two seasons and Fogelman also said he and the writers are already planning out future seasons.

“We talk big picture of both seasons and beyond,” he said. “When we talk about things, a big storyline or a big arc, we say, ‘Is that for now?’ Even if it’s a really exciting story and we want to go write that and put it on TV right now, we also go, ‘man it would be great to do that in Season 4 of Season 5.’ As hard as it is to sit on that storyline, it makes more sense when the family’s at this stage or that time.”

This Is Us returns to NBC on Tuesday, September 26 at 9 p.m. See the first clip below.
