Warner Bros. has set its Crazy Stupid Love and Focus filmmakers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra to write and direct an untitled film starring Jared Leto and Margot Robbie as the Joker and his muse Harley Quinn, the Tracking Board has learned.
Described as a “criminal love story” in the vein of Natural Born Killers, this project would come on the heels of the characters’ reunion in Suicide Squad 2, and would take the place of Gotham City Sirens, which has been reconceived. That means David Ayer is no longer attached to direct any movies in the DCEU… thank God.
The Joker-Harley Quinn movie would be separate from the Joker origin story that was revealed on Tuesday with Todd Phillips co-writing and possibly directing.
Besides their comedy backgrounds, Requa and Ficarra have one more thing in common with Phillips, as they’re also coming off a flop in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Frankly, the DCEU is such a mess these days, I’m not surprised this workmanlike duo is the best Warner Bros. could do.
Apologies for sounding cynical, but I’m finding it hard to get excited for this one… and comic book movies in general, these days. But that’s another story for another day (sigh).
