WME and Bellevue Productions are out with a hot new spec that should make some waves in certain media circles. They’re shopping JUST THE FACTS, a biopic about A.J. Daulerio, the former Editor-in-Chief of Gawker, the Tracking Board has exclusively learned.
Written by Kenny Kyle, Just the Facts tells the riveting true story of Daulerio’s meteroic rise from obscure sports blogger to the EIC of Gawker during the wild, heady early days of the digital journalism boom. Daulerio’s run atop Gawker culminated in the Hulk Hogan sex tape trial, which brought about Gawker’s downfall and set a precedent for billionaires to attack the media and free speech.
The script is being pitched as a edgy drama closer in tone to The Big Short or The Wolf of Wall Street than more traditional journalism movies like Spotlight and The Post. All four of those films were nominated for Best Picture, mind you.
>We’ve heard that the producers who have been lucky enough to read it have already volunteered their services, sensing a hunger in the marketplace for these kinds of true stories.
Daulerio’s life is ripe for the feature film treatment, as he was molested as a child and battled cocaine addiction before losing his life savings and his Soho apartment when his Gawker boss Nick Denton threw him under the bus during the Hulk Hogan lawsuit, according to this Esquire interview.
Kyle is an up-and-coming scribe whose writing credits include an episode of the hit CBS series Hawaii Five-0. He’s represented by Jeff Portnoy at Bellevue, as well as Tanya Cohen and CJ Fight at WME.
