Continuing a commitment to more original, scripted content, YouTube Red has given a series order to the drama pilot IMPULSE, directed and executive produced by Doug Liman. The project is the digital service’s first drama pilot and is set for a 2018 premiere.
Based on the third novel in Steven Gould’s Jumper series, the story follows a 16-year-old girl, Henry (Maddie Hasson), longing to escape from her small town, when she suddenly discovers she can teleport. In the book, the protagonist’s parents can teleport or “jump” as well.
Missi Pyle, Sarah Desjardins, Enuka Okuma, and Craig Arnold fill out the remainder of the series’ cast, with David James Elliott set to recur.
The project hails from a story by Jeffrey Lieber and the script is being written by Lieber, Jason Horwitch, and Gary Spinelli. It’s in development at Universal Cable Productions and Hypnotic, whose series Nightflyers, based on the George R.R Martin novella, recently received a pilot order from Syfy.
Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content at YouTube praised the series, saying: “This unique thriller pulled us in right from the opening scene.”
This series order follows YouTube’s pickups of the sci-fi drama Lifeline, produced by Dwayne Johnson, the gaming comedy Good Game from Dan Harmon, and a Step Up reboot. The story was first reported by Deadline.
