The project is inspired by Karin Tanabe’s book The Gilded Years, but in an interesting twist, the story will be presented as a psychological thriller built around the true story of Hemmings, a light-skinned, African-American woman who passed as white so she could attend Vassar at the turn of the century.
Monica Beletsky will write the script, and Zendaya will produce the film alongside Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine partner Lauren Neustadter.
Zendaya recently starred opposite Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and she’ll soon be seen alongside Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in The Greatest Showman. She’s represented by CAA and Monster Talent Management.
Witherspoon recently starred in and executive produced HBO’s acclaimed miniseries Big Little Lies. The Oscar-winning actress next stars in Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time. She’s repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment.
Beletsky has written for hit TV shows including Fargo, The Leftovers, Parenthood and Friday Night Lights. She is also repped by CAA.
