24: LEGACY Review: “8:00 PM – 9:00 PM”

As the day continues, Eric (Corey Hawkins) and CTU stay one step behind as an old adversary rears his head. All it takes is one person to change the game and that’s exactly what happened on 24: LEGACY tonight as Asim Naseri (Oded Fehr) comes full force for a captured Jadalla bin-Khalid (Raphael Acloque). With everyone playing directly into the trap, saving the day may come at a high cost.

Picking up from where we left off last week, Eric is searching through the rubble with CTU for survivors as well as any signs of Naseri. Carter contacts Keith Mullins at CTU (Teddy Sears) on any phone calls coming from his location. A trace shows a near-by residence to which Eric and two other CTU agents head to the house. Meanwhile, Eric tells Issac (Ashley Thomas) to keep Nicole safe. Meanwhile, Keith fills us in on Naseri. Naseri was a bodyguard for Jadalla’s father who was hired by Eric’s Ranger unit to work as a translator. Upon infiltrating the unit and using their intelligence asset, he kills the asset and the asset’s family that included three children. Eric was the one who found the family.

Naseri contacts Stephen Grant, CTU head of security, to comply with his demands on freeing Jadalla and letting them into CTU. Eric, along with two other agents, arrives at the home of the call from where Naseri made the call. The men search the house and keep Naseri’s henchwoman under gunpoint. She manages to get the upper hand and kills one of the CTU agents. Eric manages to shoot her dead and finds Jennifer Marshall in the basement of her home tied down with a bomb strapped to her chest. Mariana Stiles (Coral Peña) manages to hack into the video feed and create a loop of the video that is being live streamed to Naseri’s phone of Marshall. With that in play and Eric’s photo of the bomb being helpful, Eric is being talked through on disarming it as CTU’s bomb squad is twenty minutes out. Eric is successfully being talked through on disarming it, but a scared and panicked Marshall activated the vibration sensor causing Eric, Marshall and the other agent to jump in a corner after throwing the bomb towards the other side of the basement. After it goes off Marshall explains that she is Stephen Grant’s secret mistress. Keith hearing the whole thing puts CTU on lockdown but Naseri and his men have already infiltrated the building.

Rebecca Ingram (Miranda Otto) watches Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) pack up the interrogation equipment. Exchanging farewells, Rebecca then heads to CTU and tries to contact her husband John Donovan (Jimmy Smits) who has taken his father Henry (Gerald McRaney) home. Henry tells John that there is no evidence linking him to the attacks and that his tracks are so covered that he can still run for President. Disgusted John leaves and finally returns Rebecca’s calls. John wants to reconcile face to face with Rebecca before talking to campaign heads on withdrawing from the race. John arrives at CTU to meet with his wife only for Naseri’s men to take him as a hostage after freeing Jadalla and killing Stephen Grant.

This episode was a much-needed improvement as the only implausible logical leap in this episode is Naseri figuring out that the CTU head of security has a mistress that he wants to keep a secret from everyone. I don’t know how that happens, but okay. Everything else was solid and this hour moved fast as Carter spent most of the episode disarming the bomb that was filled with tension throughout the episode. Cross-cutting back and forth between Carter and the bomb and Grant making sure Naseri gets what he wants was expertly done as that kept the pace fast and the tension high.

However, Otto and Smits continue to lack chemistry and it shows. I can honestly care less if they stay married or not as their goals are on opposite ends of the spectrum and I don’t buy for one second that they are in love. Also, Nicole needs to leave Eric as she keeps leaving him with Issac. I loved that even Issac got pissed this episode and how he keeps going off to play the hero instead of taking care of Nicole. He has to remind him that three of his men died trying to save him. What’s more is when Issac takes Nicole home, she finds letters from Rebecca about him seriously considering becoming a CTU agent, which he will as this is pretty much what this whole season has been building to. Nicole should transfer to another hospital somewhere away from the Carter brothers as she deserves much, much better. I was also glad to see Andy (Dan Bucatinsky) reinstated once he got back to CTU.

There are three episodes left and I have no idea how they plan on wrapping this up or if this will end on a cliffhanger. I really doubt Eric and Nicole’s marriage will survive this day, but at the same time, I don’t want her to end up with Issac. I just hope between now and mid-April no more surprise bad guys pop up. It would also seem that Tony is gonna play a big role in getting John out of the hands of Jadalla and Naseri. I’m all for it as Tony has been a non-entity as far as I’m concerned. Good luck Eric. You’re gonna need it.
