Last year, the Tracking Board broke the news that Jane the Virgin star would be voicing a new CARMEN SANDIEGO animated series for Netflix, but now, it looks like the Golden Globe-winning actor will also be appearing in a live action feature for the streaming giant.
Rodriguez will produce the film through her I Can and I Will Productions along with Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser from HMH Productions, Misher Films also having produced Rodriguez’s upcoming crime-thriller Miss Bala. Andy Berman of Misher Films will be an exec producer.
Netflix previously announced the animated Carmen Sandiego series for 2019 with Rodriguez providing the leading voice, but a live action feature would help to continue the brand. Previously, 20th Century Fox had been developing a feature based on the character but that never panned out. The Netflix film will be a stand-alone based on the popular ’90s character, but no director or writer has been attached as of yet.
The property is owned by publisher and learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), who had success with the computer game series in the ’90s, which led to a game show called Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? and the Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego animated series on FOX Kids. HMH will release a new series of books featuring Carmen to coincide with the release of the series.
Represented by CAA and Karl Austen, Rodriguez recently appeared in the Alex Garland sci-fi thriller Annihilation with Natalie Portman, and her remake of the Oscar-nominated Mexican thriller Miss Bala, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, will be released by Sony in Jan. 2019. In between, Rodriguez voices the lead role in Warner Bros.’ upcoming animated film Small Foot.
Deadline broke the fact that Netflix is developing a live action film with Rodriguez.
