Distributor A24 is breaking out big with its first production, MOONLIGHT. After a run of indie hits including Amy, a documentary on troubled singer Amy Winehouse, and Ex Machina, one of the best sci-fi thrillers of the decade, A24 is stepping away from the backend to produce with its new partner, Plan B.
The script, based on MacArthur Fellow Tarell McCraney’s play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, is written and will be directed by Barry Jenkins. Jenkins’ debut feature, Medicine for Melancholy, opened to critical acclaim and is currently streaming on Netflix.
Moonlight follows two Miami boys as they journey to manhood, awaken sexually, and wade through the paradox that has been created by the modern war on drugs.
A24 is fully financing Moonlight and also owns the worldwide rights to the film.
