Alice Braga Replaces Rosario Dawson as Dr. Cecilia Reyes in “X-Men” Spinoff “New Mutants”

Queen of the South star has come on to replace Rosario Dawson in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spinoff , the Tracking Board has confirmed.

Josh Boone is directing the film, which will star Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) and newcomer Blu Hunt. They’ll play a group of teens who must escape a secret facility where they’re being held while they learn to cope with their superpowers.

It’s unclear why Dawson left the comic book movie, but it will be Braga who will ultimately play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a doctor with special powers — and secrets — of her own. Dawson may be a bigger star, but Braga is a solid actress on her own and may prove to be the better fit with this young ensemble.

Just as Logan played out like an old-school western, New Mutants is also said to be experimenting with genre as Fox aims for the darker vibe of a horror-thriller. Boone wrote the script with Knate Lee, and production is expected to start next month in Boston, as Fox will release the movie on April 13, 2018.

Braga is a Brazillian actress who genre fans will remember from such high-profile films as Elysium, Predators and I Am Legend. She’s represented by and , and the Hollywood Reporter broke the news of her casting.
