“Hunger Games” Actress Amandla Stenberg Nabs Lead In Adaptation Of Black Lives Matter Novel “The Hate U Give”



has scored the lead in the film adaptation of THE HATE U GIVE, the debut novel from . The YA novel is inspired by the Black Lives Movement and will be directed by .

The script will be adapted by Under the Tuscan Sun scribe . The title comes from the tattoo of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur which reads “T.H.U.G.” The story follows Starr, a 16-year old girl who grows up in the slums but now attends an upper class prep school in the suburbs. When she witnesses a police officer shoot an unarmed friend, her world is turned upside down.

The Hate U Give was a hot title on the film rights market. After a competitive bidding war, , Temple Hill and State Street came out on top. Before breaking into the film rights market, the book was part of another bidding war between 13 publishing houses until it was finally acquire by Balzer + Bray.

Stenberg is best known for her role as Rue in the Hunger Games. She also voiced a character in the animated feature, Rio 2. Most recently, she starred in As You Are which premiered at the Sundance Festival in January.
